UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
