The Siblings from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and at Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov grins as he thinks about how his family's life has changed since relocating to England from Dagestan a decade ago.

"I am fond of it here," the Professional Fighters League star declares.

"We often say, 'this is the nation I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his home in the North Caucasus of Russia because his father believed a move covering more than 3,000 miles would provide better career opportunities for him and his siblings.

The original idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish school before joining one of the country's universities.

However, life has turned out quite distinct for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a professional mixed martial arts athlete and is seen as one of the leading talents in the PFL, a major MMA league.

His brothers have chosen a different path in athletics and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a spot in the first team.

"Our key goal for us is to extract the maximum from our chosen fields," says Ibragim.

"I want them to represent every one of the finest teams in the world. Today it is Man United, tomorrow it might be a another team."

From Grapplers to Soccer Talents

Located in the south of Russia, Dagestan has a mythical status among combat sports enthusiasts for producing a slew of UFC titleholders in the past few years.

The region has a long tradition in grappling, thriving in the combat sambo style and producing a host of Olympic and world champions.

This success is no accident, though, as youth from the region are frequently encouraged to begin combat sports, specifically wrestling, practically as soon as they can stand.

"As a young, my dad was always telling me and my younger brothers that we needed to be powerful, firstly to defend yourself, your relatives, and your friends," says Ibragim.

"Therefore we all became accustomed to fighting, and which is why everyone understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a highly skilled wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it helped my little brothers a great deal."

"Many of the players he faces lack the identical base he has. That's why he's solid, powerful and really competitive – because of wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, trainers placed him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the oversight and was perfectly capable holding his own against older players thanks to his experience in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," remarks Ibragim.

Amir was signed, together with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as just weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's ability and he transferred across the Pennines consequently.

"They played Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a spectacular free-kick," recalls Ibragim.

"One of their scouts saw him play and selected him straight away."

Six years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's records to train with the first team when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Know what he said to me? 'Here is where I belong'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They need to allow all the youthful players get game time now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the current first-team players. I think the young guys are hungrier than the present first-team players."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the younger once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up everything faster than everyone else. He's a good defender. He's going to be similar to a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Dream' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and dedicates most of his days honing his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he passed three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev prepare for a late-year UFC title fight.

"I would never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we always used to look up to him when we were young."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from training with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim says he is eager to claim a world title of his own one day.

However that does not stop him from sometimes fantasizing of playing for United and stepping out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I owned a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he says.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a fantasy realized."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a goal for me. I was speaking to the PFL officials about it to see if they could do it. It would be enormous."
