It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
