The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer direction.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire text from the president's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the progress of the game in the months to follow.
David
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Face the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and tests that evolve every session. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your group can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
The game lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as creation continues.
