The Academy Awards will commence airing only on the global video platform in 2029, signaling the latest significant transformation in the film industry.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on this week, confirming that it finalized a long-term agreement awarding YouTube the exclusive global rights to the Oscars through 2033.

The Oscars, set for March 15th, has been televised for a half a century on the traditional network. Commencing in 2029, the show will be viewable in real-time without charge on YouTube.

It's one more major upheaval in Hollywood, which is navigating corporate acquisitions and consolidations, in addition to drastic slashes to movie budgets.

"Our Academy represents an global institution, and this alliance will permit us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the most extensive international crowd attainable - which will be advantageous for our membership and the movie industry," said the Academy's executives in a release.

Throughout a long period, ratings of the televised event have dropped, although there was a minor increase in 2025, with a notable portion of youthful audiences streaming from cell phones and computers.

In a separate statement, the video platform's chief executive referred to the Oscars "one of our vital pillars of culture" and added that partnering with the Academy would "spark a younger cohort of innovation and cinema enthusiasts while staying true to the Oscars' celebrated heritage".

The broadcast network, which has streamed the ceremony since 1976, commented that it was looking forward "to the next three telecasts" it will retain rights for.

This decision follows major studios confront complex corporate battles. Such proposals were viewed as concerning for an business that has witnessed drastic cuts over the past several years.

In common with big production houses, traditional TV channels have encountered challenges as the public has shifted towards streaming services instead.

YouTube obtaining broadcasting rights to the Oscars strongly indicates that the dominance of streaming sites will continue to grow.
