Radioactive Shrimp Issue: Indonesia Confronts Pollution in Major Manufacturing Zone

A significant industrial zone situated in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive contamination after an official taskforce detected presence of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities within the area, that encompasses businesses shipping frozen marine products.

This discovery has led to immediate decontamination operations and the moving of local residents, following a comparable contamination alert in the United States that was linked to the Jakarta facilities.

Probe and Detection of Contamination

Indonesian authorities initiated an investigation when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of chilled breaded shrimp exported by an Indonesian firm.

Officials released an advisory instructing suppliers and sellers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected level was well under the agency's action threshold. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate risk to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary health effect of worry following extended, repeated small amount contact (eg through eating of polluted food or water over time) is an increased chance of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Health Examinations

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial zone were affected. The official taskforce did not name the 21 additional production sites, but confirmed they would promptly undergo decontamination procedures conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy authority.

A senior official declared that residents living in strongly contaminated zones would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health officials also performed checks on local employees and residents living close to the industrial zone, finding 9 individuals who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.

Decontamination and Containment Measures
