Micky van de Ven Brace Ends Everton's Run at New Stadium

The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
