Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
