Israelis have gathered throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an late session of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies provision
  • Post-war management of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home now and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk falls, the dread comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we check the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the south region of that area said two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers stated.

The region's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
