Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.
All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and a third person who ran away after the blast was located soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area showed the structure left as a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander stated to the media.
A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the interior minister stated.
The wounded by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.
According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The official believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, noting that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
